For me it wasn’t anything to do with any kind of cancer diagnosis, I just found biology very interesting. I thought it was crazy how tiny molecular changes could create such havoc on a patient, and that we could potentially fix it by just adding one other kind of molecule that could reverse the changes. So I suppose the answer is that my experience that made me want to research cancer was my degree!

I always was interested in cancer, because my mum died of ovarian cancer when I was 8. Since then, I always wanted to understand more about the disease and what could be done to help people. I originally wanted to be a doctor, so I could treat patients with cancer, but I ended up doing a science degree after high school instead and just stuck with that

I’ll be honest – I’m not sure a cure to cancer is what I am aiming for! Mainly because I think it is too big a task to happen in my lifetime, and I’m not sure the many and varied changes that encompass cancer can be cured, as such.

But I wanted to work in this area because I love being a doctor, and working in cancer, you naturally want to make people better. I think research is the only way we can do that!

I don’t think any one experience made me want to research cancer. I think hearing about how many people it affects was a big reason I wanted to study cancer, as I knew I wanted a career where I could make a difference and help people.

At the moment, my research isn’t really looking to cure cancer either, but I hope that what I find out can help us better understand the type of cancer I am studying and find a better way of monitoring these patients so they can have better outcomes during treatment and after their cancer is treated.
