Hi Steven – thanks for your question!
So at first, medical school was quite overwhelming. Everyone just seemed to be good at everything and going from school lessons (30 people in a room) to big lectures (200+ people) was really different! My medical school course was quite traditional, which worked well for me – the first two years were basic science using medical cases to frame the science we were learning. My third year onwards was a lot more clinical – which was differently overwhelming – learning to take a history, talk with patients and other healthcare staff, learning how to examine patients and make sense of your findings and digest all of that into a plan. I think it just takes a while to get over round one of ‘imposter syndrome’ – something I think most of us still grapple with now!
But the main thing I remember about medical school was how incredibly fun it was, and I made the best friends in my life there. Of course there were stressful moments, exams and assignments etc, seemingly so much to learn (that never ends!) and it is difficult to live on a student budget for a long time. But you go through that together, which makes it so much easier.
I hope that answers your question!

I didn’t study medicine, but Biology. However, I had a PhD in Biomedical Science and that was hard. Despite this, I am still happy with my choice: I have learned a lot and I have consolidated my passion for my job.

Hi Steven! I never went to med school. I studied biology and biochemistry in Bareclona, Catalonia. I then did an Master in research and finally my PhD at Bristol University (UK), which is a philosophy doctorate, not a medical doctorate. So sorry I cannot answer how hard med school was. My husband attended med school in Italy and says it was hard for him as he had to study a lot, but he managed and now he is very happy with the choice he made!

I never went to med school myself so can’t comment from personal experience. From those I have spoke to however, I won’t pretend that it is an easy thing to pursue. I get the impression that your experience can vary between the institutions you study at because of the teachers there and the approaches they may use to teach you. My only advice is to keep asking this question if you want to pursue medicine, getting a range of perspectives is the best way to inform your own decisions.

I didn’t do medicine but I did do a bachelor of medical science which was great because I learnt about all different body systems and this is what lead me to my research interest in immunology.

After doing work experience in a hospital I realized med school wasn’t for me. I realized being a doctor is as much about bedside manner and making the patient comfortable as it is biology, and I realized what I was mostly interested in was the biology side of things. So thankfully I never went!
