Education:
I moved to Canada by myself when I was 14. I attended a couple of boarding schools in Canada (Albert College and Havergal College) before moving to Scotland to attend medical schools (St Andrews Medical School and Edinburgh Medical School).
-
Qualifications:
I obtained a high school diploma in Canada. During high school, I took three science courses (biology, chemistry and physics), some mathematics courses (statistics and calculus), art, economics, sociology/psychology/anthropology, English and Spanish. During medical school, I obtained a degree in medicine and surgery (sometimes referred to as MBChB) and an additional science degree after working on a research project in human immunodeficiency virus. I wanted to learn more after graduating medical school, so I took a couple of courses relating to scientific principles of surgery and diseases. Since last Autumn, I became a student again to study cancers!

Work History:
- High school
- I volunteered at after school clubs for two years. I had opportunities to be friends and to help younger students in primary school how to learn some tricky subjects. I learned a lot by teaching younger students. It also taught me the importance of sharing your experience and knowledge.
- In my last year of high school, I volunteered at a local hospital serving food and drinks, keeping company with and spending time with patients. I learned to appreciate the importance of good health and the importance of everyone being able to access good healthcare.
- University
- While I was a medical student, I spent some Summer time volunteering and undertaking short placements at hospitals in Seoul, South Korea. This is when I realised how challenging it is to treat some cancers. I also did a short placement at a stem cell research lab where I gained some basic laboratory skills.
- In my last year of medical school, I went alone to Vancouver, Canada and Boston, America to undertake placements at a cancer care centre and trauma intensive care unit. It was an intense eye-opening experience.
- After graduating university
- As a trainee doctor, I worked to gain skills and knowledge in various branches of medicine and surgery for two years. I then became a trainee doctor specialising in cellular pathology afterwards.
- I decided to gain experience in research that brings science and medicine together. So, I undertook a research fellowship at a cancer research institute in London before moving to Manchester to pursue a 4-year long research studentship.

I moved from South Korea to Canada when I was your age, then moved to Scotland after I left school to study medicine. After few years working as a trainee doctor, I decided to return to being a student again, to undertake an important research project in pancreatic cancer. 🧫🧬🔬

My Typical Day:
Everyday is different. I usually wake up before 7 am 🌞 – this is a bit hard as I am not the best morning person, and go to my lab before 9 am.🥼 I run various short and long experiments which can take hours to days.🧪🧫 I also attend interesting talks and lectures given by fellow students and senior researchers, have meetings with scientists and doctors I work with, look at my data from experiments and plan what to do next.🦉🦉 After work, I go to the gym or yoga.🤸♀️

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to spend the prize money on reaching out to more students on how science and medicine (especially study of diseases – pathology!)🔬🔬🔬 are fun😆, interesting🤩 and rewarding😃.
